AT in the Cloud

Maintaining communication page sets on an AAC device can be overwhelming.  In this video I discuss one of the tricks I use to edit J’s page sets on my laptop while making sure that J’s Tobii C12 is kept up to date with the latest edits.

For those interested in how to make use of DropBox as a way of editing AAC page sets on Tobii devices, here is the how to video:

Bench Walking AT Home

One of the things J is working on in Physical Therapy is assisted walking.  Here is a look at some AT J’s PT built to help facilitate bench walking around the house.

Let the AT Arms Race Begin

While it has been a quiet month on my YouTube channel and blog, I have been busy in the AT Skunk Works labs on a top secret project.  Now that it is finished let me throw the first stone in the AT Arms Race.  🙂

Happy Independence Day

I just wanted to wish all of my fellow Americans a Happy Independence Day. I hope everyone had a great time with their families and found a way to celebrate the anniversary of such an important part of history. For all of my readers who are not American, I hope you had a great 4th of July yourself!

BenjaminFranklin

At the beginning of the week, J and I started reading about Benjamin Franklin. Not just one of our Founders and a brilliant mind, but one of America’s first Assistive Tech pioneers. He was a true tinkerer and amount his various inventions and experiments were some AT devices.  Here is a lost of some of his inventions that I would consider Assistive Tech of some level:

  • Bifocals – probably his most famous invention. Hat is easily identified as AT
  • Electricity – probably his most famous invention period, but not thought of as AT, but can you imagine any medium or high tech AT without electricity?
  • Swim fins – Franklin loved swimming his entire life. At age 11 he invented a pair of swim fins he wore on his hands.
  • Flexible Urinary Catheter – Here is one of Franklin’s inventions that is not so well known. Before Franklin’s invention urinary catheters were rigid and quite painful. When Benjamin’s brother, John, got kidney stones Benjamin created a catheter using flexible tubing to ease some of his brother’s pain.
  • “Long Arm” – This was simply a long wooden pole with a grasping arm at the end to grab books off of high shelves.  Franklin was an avid reader but found reaching books on high shelves to be a problem.
So on this Independence Day week I will not only be learning and teaching J about Benjamin Franklin’s life in general, but I will also be looking upon at least one of our country’s Founding Fathers with new eyes:  Benjamin Franklin, Assistive Technology Engineer!

No Tech Eye Gaze AAC

Since last week people seemed very interested in AT Rule of Life #1 (Every High Tech AT Solution Needs At Least One Low or No Tech Alternative), I thought I would share a No Tech Eye Gaze AAC solution we use at the AT Household as an alternative to J’s High Tech AAC device.

Summer AT On A Shoestring

A beautiful summer day at the AT household inspired me to share a little summer Assistive Tech on a shoestring budget.

Note To Self . . .

. . . do not write joke “End of the World” good-bye posts without pre-writing and scheduling a follow up post.  I know anyone who actually read my last post would have realized it was a joke; however, having a post titled “Good Bye and Thanks!” as the last activity on the blog for three months does not inspire confidence nor does it attract new readers.

I am sorry for being so quiet lately.  We have had an unexpected guest stop by the AT household.  Some of you may actually know the guest yourself – Murphy.  I cannot say that we have sent Murphy packing yet, but we at least found him a hotel room nearby so that we get some family time without Murphy hanging out.

I am hoping to be able to at least write an occasional entry, but I am not sure how frequent I can update here.  Please feel free to use the comment section to ask questions or start a conversation.
